A Century of Films

"Invited by the Guardian newspaper to choose his hundred favourite films in a weekly column, film writer and critic Derek Malcolm set out on a project which has resulted in this most stimulating, entertaining and surprisingly personal view of world cinema. This book is not so much just another 'best-of' compilation as a critical celebration of one hundred films based on a knowledge and understanding of what cinema can achieve." "Derek Malcolm gave himself a single rule: to select one film each from the directors he most admires. Whether showing us new ways of seeing a familiar classic or celebrating a half-forgotten film, whether writing about stars and actors, cinematographers or moments of cinematic grace, Derek Malcolm demonstrates how it is that he has earned his place as one of the world's most celebrated film critics."--Jacket.
