Essay. Cultural criticism. Luis Rafael Sánchez (1936) is without a doubt the most important contemporary Puerto Rican writer. Well-known for his theatrical works and fiction that critique society and culture, both Puerto Rican and universal, Sánchez has also published Los ángeles se han fatigado (drama, 1960), La hiel nuestra de cada día (drama, 1960), La farsa del amor compradito (drama, 1960), En cuerpo de camisa (short stories, 1966), La pasión según Antígona Pérez (drama, 1968), Casi el alma (drama, 1974), La Guaracha del Macho Camacho (novel, 1976), Fabulación e ideología en la cuentística de Emilio S. Beleval (literary criticism, 1979), Quíntuples (drama, 1985), La importancia de llamarse Daniel Santos (novel, 1988), La guagua aérea (essay, 1994), No llores por nosotros Puerto Rico (essay, 1997), Devórame otra vez: artículos de primera necesidad (essay, 2006), Indiscreciones de un perro gringo (novel, 2007), among others. Most recently, in April 2013, Luis Rafael Sánchez received the first ever Pedro Henríquez Ureña literary prize recognizing his life's work awarded by the Government of the Dominican Republic.
