American affairs

"'American Affairs' is the story of an American history professor living in a country that has just overthrown a longtime dictator. Set in Portugal in 1974-75, this elegant novel provides an insight into an attempt by America to install a democracy in a formerly totalitarian state that is undergoing a revolution. Sectarian violence, language problems, CIA and State Department blunders all contribute to the sad experiences of a well-meaning American professor who becomes intimately and tragically involved with a lovely woman and the deteriorating political scene"--From publisher description.
