American Surgery

"This illustrated volume leads you on an exploration of the evolution of surgery in America. Although the techniques and discoveries of America's early surgeons formed the basis for modern surgical practice, this fascinating topic has received little written attention - until now." "What was the daily life of surgeons throughout the history of America? Where and how were surgeries performed? In what manner were early surgeons affected by wars, technological advances, and major historical events?" "American Surgery: An Illustrated History unearths these fascinating facts - and others - previously buried in the past. Interspersed with this dramatic narrative is an extraordinary collection of more than 400 archival photographs and illustrations, many of which have never before appeared in print." "Three levels of historical content are present throughout: first, significant developments within American history as they affected life in the era, complete with historical timelines and background on socioeconomic and political milieux; second, the development of professionalism and specialization in American surgery throughout history; and third, a detailed understanding of the great American surgeons, featuring more than 1,000 biographical entries."--Jacket.
