Cornelius Johnson

"Prolific and successful in his own lifetime, Cornelius Johnson (1593-1661) is now the forgotten man of seventeenth-century British art....To art historians in the Netherlands - where Johnson spent the final eighteen years of his life - he is known as 'Cornelis Jonson van Ceulen', but in the present book, for consistency, he will be referred to as 'Cornelius Johnson' which is the form of signature that he used on his early paintings. Johnson was born into a Flemish/German immigrant family in 1593 in London."--P. 7.
