This volume contains a selection of 36 chapters from among the more than 100 presentations given at the 2000 International Conference on the Information Society in the 21st Century held in Aizu-Wakamatsu, Japan. The work presented here not only covers the most recent research results in emerging information technology-based fields, but also reflects on their impact on society at large. The chapters of the book are in six parts: Information and knowledge management; collaborative Internet, multimedia, and electronic commerce; robots and auditory interfaces; the knowledge-driven economy and society; information technology-based educational options; and newly emerging technologies. Everyone interested in how information technology is evolving will benefit from this publication.
