Hellenistic Philosophy

Interest in Hellenistic philosophy has grown substantially in recent years. Along with the increase in interest, the need for a reliable and convenient guide to the source materials has become apparent. These new translations by Professors Gerson and Inwood provide the most comprehensive selection available of Hellenistic philosophy, written over a period of some eight hundred years, in both Latin and Greek. By presenting the central texts of Epicureanism, Stoicism, and Scepticism with a consistent vocabulary, these scrupulous new translations convey a sense of the ongoing discussion among the Hellenistic philosophers, showing the common conceptual ground for most of the argumentation in the texts and enabling the contemporary reader to comprehend their contribution to Western philosophy. Abundant cross-references, a glossary of philosophical terms, a list of philosophers, and a general index enhance the usefulness of this valuable work. - Back cover.
