Islam, Modernism and the West

"The challenge facing both Muslims and Westerners is to find a new definition of Islam and a fresh understanding of 'Westernization'. In Islam, Modernism and the West, leading Muslim and Western scholars examine the existing grounds for debate and consider new avenues of thought and research. They set out to present a controversial but positive interpretation of relationships between Islam and concepts of modernity, democracy, secularism and citizenship. They consider Islam in dynamic terms in order to ask questions about its possible future in the fields of economics, politics and society, discussing Islamism and the nature of its relations with the West. In short, these questions work towards a mutual concern about, and against, 'civilization shock'."--Jacket.
