Japan's Modern Theatre

"This study is the first outline history of theatre in modern Japan. It discusses both main trends and individual companies - opening at the Meiji Restoration of 1868 and concluding about a century later. It has been written by someone, states the author, 'who has never ceased marvelling at the sheer abundance of theatre in modern Japan'." "Japanese theatre history is full of colourful personalities: this book pays homage to them by explaining how their dedicated activities helped to create the wealth of theatre art that Japanese theatre-goers have enjoyed since the late nineteenth century."--BOOK JACKET.
