Kumokiri Nizaemon (雲霧 仁左衛門)

This Ikenami's picaresque novel set in the Edo period published in 1974 and later adapted into films, TV dramas, and manga. The title character KUMOKIRI Nizaemon is a fictional great bandit who imposes rules (no murder, no adultery, only steal from the rich) on him and his companions. Nizaemon is thought to be a mixture portrait of existing robberies in Edo in the late 18th century. Traditional Kabuki and Kosyaku (a style of traditional oral Japanese storytelling) also tell stories of Nizaemon. これは、池波正太郎が享保の江戸を舞台に描いたピカレスク小説である。1974年に出版されて以降、何度もドラマ化されており、漫画の原作にもなっている。最も新しい映像化は2013年のNHK BS時代劇シリーズのものである。 池波の小説において、仁左衛門は、殺し、手篭め、貧しい者からの盗みを禁じる掟を守る盗賊として設定されている。火付盗賊改方の安部式部との知恵比べが描かれる。 仁左衛門は、講釈や大岡政談で、「盗賊・雲霧五人男」（雲霧仁左衛門と手下の盗賊）の頭目として描かれ、江戸末期から明治期にかけては歌舞伎の題材ともなった。
