Inspirateur reconnu de Ferdinand de Saussure qui disait le "révérer" le savant américain, formé par Franz Bopp, fut le premier à chercher les principes généraux et les lois du système du langage considéré en lui-même, autrement dit à fonder une linguistique générale constituée comme science.
