Lie of the land

"Can you always believe what you see on a map? Is a map always a true reflection of the ground beneath our feet? Lie of the Land invites you to take a closer look at maps and to discover that there is often more to a map than meets the eye." "In this new book, more than thirty specially selected maps are illustrated and discussed in detail, revealing the secrets hidden in the maps and the human stories behind their creation. Maps reflect the views of their makers and the societies and times in which they were made, and this book gathers together maps from around the world that have been used for the purpose of control, those reflecting a personal view of the world and those that reveal more when you take a closer look."--Jacket.
