Loyalism in Ireland 1789-1829

"Irish loyalism in the pivotal period between the French Revolution and Catholic emancipation has been a largely neglected and misunderstood subject. Based on extensive new research from sources ranging from parliamentary papers to popular ballads, this book examines the subject in its contemporary context. Vital questions are addressed: were Irish loyalists during the French wars drawing on pre-existing traditions of exclusively Protestant loyalism or following broader counter-revolutionary patterns, thus becoming, as William Pitt claimed, 'the Brethren of Britons'?"--BOOK JACKET.
