Nantes 1886

על הספר
In October 1886, Nantes organized a large art fair which presented nearly 1800 works at the Saint-André course: paintings, drawings, engravings, sculptures. Among the artists, there are great academic names of the time as Delaunay, Gerome or Merson, but also the impressionist vanguard that will mark the history of art: Renoir, Sisley, Seurat, Guillaumin, Stevens, Rodin. If this show is hailed by the press and the people who come running, it symbolizes the tumultuous irruption of modernity in Nantes. Indeed, the Impressionists are scandalous and trigger genuine controversy in the local press. The audience is shocked by this sudden eruption of modernity on the walls of this show that made history. The Salon de Nantes symbolizes a unique opportunity to show new aesthetic paths. This event upset the mentalities but also the taste of collectors. Purchases made by individuals and by the City Museum will change the public's apprehension about the art of the time when academicism will gradually give way to other more daring forms, such as Impressionism or symbolism. The exhibition returns to this wonderful show that embodies, through the most beautiful works presented at the time, the exceptional shift of art towards modernity.--Nantes-Tourisme.
