על הספר

"In 1957 British conscientious objector Gerald Holtom drew a simple drawing that used a combination of the semaphoric signals for the letters N and D to stand for nuclear disarmament. That symbol, painted on lollipop signs and bombproof white clay buttons, was first used by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) at the Aldermaston protest march in England on Easter Sunday, 1958. The clay buttons were distributed with a note explaining that in the event of a nuclear war, these fired-pottery pins would be among the few human artifacts to survive the inferno. As we celebrate the symbol's 50th anniversary, we are reminded of how little the world has really changed since that first Aldermaston march. The threat of nuclear proliferation remains, wars continue to be waged around the world, and people everywhere yearn for peace and harmony. Although the sign has transcended its origins, its promise remains." "With more than 250 full-colour photographs and illustrations, PEACE takes a tour through the decades of modern history and explains how the symbol gained in popularity and why it has been used so effectively for historic causes worldwide."--BOOK JACKET.
