Policing the Victorian Town

"The book provides the first detailed account of a provincial urban police force over a period of 70 years from its inception, at a time when the fast-growing Middlesbrough had a reputation as a violent frontier town (more akin to the American West or gold-rush Australia), to the immediate pre-war years, when the force had acquired experience and maturity and contributed significantly to the creation of a largely law-abiding and policed society. Particular emphasis is placed on the experiences of all ranks of policemen, the changing nature of crime in the town and (most importantly) on the evolution of a working relationships between the police and the wider, policed, community."--BOOK JACKET.
