Revisions of space

"This book can be read in a variety of ways: as a didactic manual for designers on how to deal with architecture; as selected items from the history of the space in and around buildings; and as an account of a view of architecture based on the author's own oeuvre and that of other architects. The rich potential of space is taken, not as an end in itself, but as a way of allowing a building and its surroundings to function in a meaningful way. In other words, Revisions of Space is about an architecture that offers (and leaves) space for everyday life. It is above all a plea for a more balanced approach to architecture as a whole: the design assignment, the history of architecture, and how existing buildings are handled. Dick van Gameren uses historical and contemporary examples as well as his own work to show how we can escape from this, and what the rich potential of space can mean for architecture and those who use it."--BOOK JACKET.
