This book is published to mark the expansion of a gallery that has played a central role in the way that the art of a century found its public. Purpose built in 1901, London's Whitechapel Gallery reopened in expanded premises in 2009, incorporating the former Pasmore Edwards Library, an adjacent Victorian structure, once know as the 'University of the Ghetto'--Preface.
