Scared at School

South African schoolgirls of every race and economic group daily encounter sexual violence and harassment that impedes their access to education. Girls are raped, sexually abused, sexually harassed, and assaulted at school by male classmates and even teachers. The South African government has acknowledged the problem's severity-but it has been slow in implementing effective responses and weak in enforcing existing protections. Recommendations -- Background -- Sexual violence in schools -- Consequences of gender violence for girls' education and health -- The school response -- The criminal justice system -- National and provincial government response -- South Africa's obligations under international and national law.
