Tacitus

"This book sets Tacitus clearly in context, surveying all his compelling works and clarifying the traditions of ancient writing that informed and shaped his narratives. It also traces how his works have been used and abused in subsequent eras, focusing particularly on the colourful rebel leaders Julius Civilis from the Histories, who had a lively afterlife in the Netherlands, and Arminius from the Annals, who captured the creative imagination of writers in Germany."--Jacket.
