To Deliver Their Souls

"The story of Slovak Jewry, a Jewish community of long standing, occupies a special place in the history of the Holocaust. Slovakia had both a very Orthodox Jewish community, comprising several generations of disciples of the Hatam Sofer of Bratislava (Pressburg), and a Zionist community, comprised of secular and religious Jews. The Zionist community included people aspiring to live by Jewish tradition and halakhah while interpreting Judaism in a way more compatible with the intellectual climate of the first half of our century."--Book jacket.
