Towneley Cycle

"This volume provides a critical account of the Towneley Cycle of biblical plays, originating in the fourteenth century and dramatizing the fall of Lucifer to the Last Judgment. Re-evaluating the key question of the unity of the cycle, Peter Happe reviews the cycle's textual and manuscript history, and discusses issues of language and style, the structure of the cycle, and its possible sources and analogues. In the second half of the book, he addresses the historical and religious context of the cycle and its performance history, and offers an analysis of the work of the Wakefield Master as well as other contributing dramatists."--BOOK JACKET.
