Urban Temple

Through his exploration of Korean sijo, a form more versatile than haiku, David McCann creates a collection that it transcendent in its observation of the particular. With his unsparing journey of loss and discovery, McCann's evocation of place recalls the sense of play and sparse wonder of Elizabeth Bishop at her most vivid. This first collection of sijo composed in English offers an innovative exploration of traditional verse form favored by the great 16thC Korean philosopher poets Yulgok and Toegye. McCann's personal adaptation of sijo is rich with the play of language, moments of intimacy, and philosophical insight.
