Waking to mourning doves begins with Caryl's childhood on a prairie farm, lovingly recounting stories of the people who influenced and nurtured her to adulthood. She tells about the area where she was raised and the family and friends who made up her 1940s and 1950s rural community, the conditions and surroundings in which they lived, their work and their leisure activities.
