Woody

Other books have been written about Woody Allen; none has yet managed fully to interpret him. This is the task Julian Fox sets for himself and succeeds at resoundingly, writing eruditely about all the films, and setting forth the broad influences of the Woody Allen style - everything from Chekhov to Bergman to Martha Graham. He traces Woody Allen's idiosyncratic progress from the early anarchic satires like What's Up Tiger Lily and Casino Royale to the astounding run of hits in the 70s and 80s - Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and her Sisters, Crimes and Misdemeanors - through the 90s and such diverse projects such as Husbands and Wives, Bullets Over Broadway and Mighty Aphrodite, revealing what make Woody Allen - hip, urban, neurotic successor to Chapman, Keaton and the Marx Brothers - our most exciting and original filmmaker.
