About the author

Arthur Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician who worked at the turn of the 20th century. He is best known for the Sherlock Holmes stories and novels, built around the fictional detective Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson, and for helping shape modern crime and detective fiction. He also wrote science fiction, historical novels, plays, and poetry.

Doyle’s writing is usually direct and plot-driven, with a strong sense of puzzle-making. In the Holmes stories, he relies on clues, observation, and careful misdirection, so the reader gets drawn into the case alongside the characters. If you like clear storytelling, steady suspense, and stories where details matter, his work is a natural fit.

A good place to start is The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, which gathers some of the best-known cases and gives a broad first look at the series. If you want the beginning of the Holmes formula, try A Study in Scarlet. For a fuller novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles is an easy next step. Shorter entry points include A Scandal in Bohemia and The Adventure of the Speckled Band, especially if you want to test the style before going deeper.
