Brothers Grimm

The Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, were two German brothers known for collecting, editing, and publishing folktales. They worked in the 19th century as scholars and researchers of language and culture, and their name is closely tied to the way many German and European fairy tales entered modern print.

Their work centers on short fairy tales and folk narratives with clear plots, strong images, and familiar themes such as danger, cleverness, transformation, reward, and punishment. The stories come from oral tradition, so they often feel compact and direct, while still carrying a distinct literary shape in the versions they published. Their influence comes from turning scattered folk material into books that readers could revisit and share.

A good place to start is Snow White, Hansel and Gretel, The Frog Prince, Rumplestiltskin, and Town Musicians of Bremen. Grimms' fairy tales is also a natural entry point if you want the broader collection. They are a good fit for readers who want classic fairy tales, short chapters, and a straightforward way into folktale tradition.
