About the author

Emily Dickinson was an American poet of the 19th century. Much of her work was not published during her lifetime, and she later came to be seen as one of the central figures in American poetry. She is closely associated with compact poems that say a great deal in a small space.

Her writing often turns toward death, faith, and inner life, while also touching on wider historical concerns such as the American Civil War. The style is often elliptical, with sharp images and a compressed voice that leaves room for the reader. Her poems do not explain everything directly; they invite you to sit with tension, pause, and reread.

A good place to start is Because I could not stop for Death, I heard a Fly buzz when I died, and "Hope" is the thing with feathers. These poems give a clear sense of her themes and her way of working with language. If you want a shorter, more playful entry point, try I'm Nobody! Who are you? or Wild Nights - Wild Nights!.
