About the author
Friedrich Schiller was a German poet, playwright, philosopher, and historian who wrote at the turn of the 19th century. He is best known for his plays and ballads, and he is closely associated with Weimar Classicism and the Sturm und Drang movement.
His writing often brings drama together with big ideas. In the plays, he returns to themes like freedom, power, morality, and emotion, while the ballads are compact, intense, and carefully shaped. He also wrote philosophical prose, including work on the aesthetic education of humanity, so his output moves between theatre, thought, and lyric writing.
A good place to start is The Robbers if you want his more rebellious side, or William Tell and Mary Stuart if you prefer historical drama. For poetry, Der Handschuh is a clear entry point. If you want the more reflective side of his work, On the Aesthetic Education of Man is a strong choice. He is an easy author to approach through either drama or poetry, depending on what you want to read first.
