About the author

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was a German philosopher and theologian, closely associated with German idealism. He is known as a major systematic thinker in modern philosophy, with an influence that reaches political thought, the history of philosophy, aesthetics, religion, and broader questions in metaphysics and logic.

His writing is analytical and highly structured, and much of it comes in essay form or as lecture material. Based on the books listed here, Hegel writes about the state and law in Elements of the Philosophy of Right, about art and how it is understood in Lectures on Aesthetics, and about the development of philosophy itself in Lectures on the History of Philosophy. Life of Jesus points to his interest in the meeting point between philosophy, religion, and theology.

A good place to start is Elements of the Philosophy of Right if you want his political thinking in a more focused form, or Lectures on Aesthetics if you are drawn to art and culture. If you want a broader map of his ideas, Lectures on the History of Philosophy is a strong entry point. He will suit readers who are comfortable with dense, conceptual prose and want a thinker who works through ideas systematically.
