About the author
Guy de Maupassant was a 19th-century French writer, best known for short stories and novels. He wrote in French and is closely linked to literary realism and the naturalist tradition.
His fiction looks at ordinary people, relationships, and the social pressures that shape their lives. The labels attached to him also point to horror fiction and weird fiction, so his work can move from sharp realism into something more unsettling. He often builds from a familiar scene or situation and then reveals the tension, irony, or discomfort underneath it.
A good place to start is The Necklace, Boule de Suif, or Bel-Ami if you want to see his short, direct style at its best. If you prefer novels, Une Vie and Pierre et Jean are solid entry points. For readers drawn to a darker, stranger mood, The Horla is the obvious next step.
