About the author
Ivan Turgenev was a 19th-century Russian writer, and also worked as a translator and a promoter of Russian literature in the West. He is best known for his novels and novellas, with Fathers and Sons standing out as the book most often associated with his name, alongside a body of work that stretches across several decades.
His writing moves between romantic fiction, short fiction, philosophical fiction, and political fiction. Based on the material here, his books tend to focus on social tensions, generational conflict, and the inner life of his characters. If you want prose that is measured rather than flashy, and that puts ideas and relationships at the center, he is an accessible place to start.
A good first read is Fathers and Sons if you want the clearest entry into what Turgenev is known for. If you prefer something shorter and more intimate, First Love and Asya are strong starting points. For readers interested in his social and intellectual side, Rudin and Home of the Gentry fit well. Mumu is especially useful if you want a brief, direct introduction to his style.
