About the author
Rainer Maria Rilke was an Austrian writer and poet from Prague, working in German at the turn of the 20th century. He is known above all for his poetry, though he also wrote one novel, several books of letters, and some early prose works.
His writing is often personal and inward-looking, with a strong focus on lived experience and perception. Critics and scholars also point to mystical undertones in his work, along with themes of doubt, inner life, and the way a person meets the world. Rather than pushing plot forward, he tends to build atmosphere, reflection, and emotional precision.
A good place to start is The Book of Hours or The Book of Images if you want an entry point into his poetry in a compact form. If you want the work most readers associate with him, try Duino Elegies or Sonnets to Orpheus. Letters to a Young Poet is a strong choice if you’re interested in Rilke as a thoughtful, conversational writer rather than only as a poet.
