About the author

Titus Livius, better known in English as Livy, was a Roman historian from the classical Roman world. He is mainly known for writing a large history of Rome and the Roman people, and for shaping how Roman history was presented in Latin literature.

His work covers a very wide sweep of Roman history, from the early legends surrounding the city’s beginnings to the age of Augustus within his own lifetime. That means the writing blends historical narrative, tradition, and a strong interest in Roman identity. Based on the data and the excerpt, Livy is best read as a major historian rather than as a writer of short, self-contained books.

A good place to start is History of Rome, the broadest and most straightforward title in the list. If you want to work through it in smaller steps, continue with History of Rome, Volume IX: Books 31-34, then History of Rome, Volume X: Books 35-37, and History of Rome, Volume XI: Books 38-40. He is a strong fit for readers who enjoy ancient history, long-form historical writing, and a slower, more cumulative reading experience.
