Vladimir Mayakovsky

Vladimir Mayakovsky was a Russian poet associated with the early 20th century Futurist movement. The material here also points to a writer who moved across forms: poetry, plays, film work, and visual art. He is known here mainly for poetry, but his profile is broader than that, with a clear place in avant-garde culture.

His writing mixes poetry, narrative poetry, comedy, satire, and dramatic forms. The titles listed here suggest a range from intense lyrical work to political and theatrical pieces. What stands out is the forward-driving style and the sense that the writing is trying to break with older literary habits rather than follow them.

A good starting point is A Cloud in Trousers or Backbone Flute if you want his poetry, or The Bedbug and The Bathhouse if you are more interested in his satirical plays. For a shorter entry into his voice, try Listen! or But Could You?. He is a strong fit for readers who enjoy experimental, high-energy writing and want a sense of early modernist Russian literature.
