Broekskeur

The publishers's description says "Born in the then Boer republic of the Orange Free State in the final decade of the 19th century, the late Stephanus "Steve" Fourie lived through some of the most tumultuous times in South African history. Sent as a six-year-old with his mother and siblings to one of the notorious British concentration camps set up during the Boer War - in which his mother and youngest sister died - he later fought on the side of Gen Jan Smuts and Gen Louis Botha in the 1914 Afrikaner Rebellion, and then against the German army in East Africa in WWI. Here, in his own words, is a vivid portrayal of family division, warfare, deprivation, hunger and disease — and of his personal journey from barefoot, unschooled urchin to a career as a magistrate.
