Enigmatik

Where, when, and how was the riddle established as a way of reflecting the possibilities, meanings, and borders of human understanding? In this study, the riddle is understood as a hermeneutic boundary figure that mediates between the meanings of dissolution and deliverance. Individual analyses of Modern and Early Modern texts focus on the riddling figures Turandot and the Sphinx, and develop a functional differentiating typology of riddles.
