"This interdisciplinary anthology highlights exiled/alienated women in literature, history, and cinema in order to problematize and shed light on the state of alienhood that stems from gendered otherness. Contributors investigate when and how women from diverse backgrounds, national origins, social classes, and ethnicities have been relegated to the margins. Ultimately, this important text explores and confronts what Julia Kristeva deems 'the foreigner within ourselves, ' and paves the way for a deeper understanding of the many artificial barriers between individuals in an increasingly more globalized world."--Publisher's website.
