About the book

"Rapid and dramatic social, economic, and technological changes have occurred in the food and agricultural sector during the last 30 years. These include increased global competition, the advent of biotechnology and precision production, changes in intellectual property rights, increased product differentiation, greater demand for ecosystem services from agriculture, and changes in farm and market structure. These changes pose new challenges for the federally funded agricultural research, extension, and education system and indicate a need for reflection on the future directions of that system." This report studies USDA's Research, Education, and Economics [REE] mission area and provides recommendations for future opportunities and directions. [Executive summary].
