The Gospel of the Hebrews is a lost Jewish-Christian gospel from the 2nd century, preserved only in short quotations in the writings of the early Church Fathers and in apocryphal texts. It was probably composed in Greek for a community of Jewish Christians in Egypt. What survives points to traditions about Jesus’ pre-existence, his incarnation, his baptism, and possibly his temptation, together with a few sayings attributed to him. Since the full text is gone, what remains is a scattered set of fragments rather than a continuous gospel narrative.
This is a good fit for readers interested in early Christianity, apocryphal writings, and the different ways Jesus traditions circulated outside the New Testament canon. Its distinctive features include the strong role given to the Holy Spirit and the emphasis on James, the brother of Jesus, which sets it apart from the familiar canonical gospels. Because so little survives, it works less as a story to read straight through and more as a compact source for seeing how early Jewish-Christian thought developed. If you are drawn to fragmentary ancient texts and religious history, this sits close to other apocryphal and early gospel traditions.
