"The need for a third edition so soon after the second was because of the publication of three important long-term outcome studies in 1997 and 1998. These were the European systolic hypertension trial (SYST-EUR), the Hypertension Optimal Treatment (HOT) trial and the UK Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS). These provide a great deal of new information on the correct management of hypertension. In addition there have been controversies on the use of calcium channel blockers and the striking success of the many angiotensin receptor antagonists.
