Havet i storm og stille var et fremtrædende motiv både i Holger Drachmanns malerkunst og i hans digtning. 'Jeg er hav' kaster nyt lys på maleren, digteren og myten Holger Drachmann og hans forhold til havet, der blev formet af hans opvækst, af det danske marinemaleri og ikke mindst af de nye, radikale tanker, der drev ind over Europa i slutningen af 1800-tallet. I tre artikler følges Drachmanns udvikling: Fra hans udgangspunkt som naturalistisk skildrer af havet til hans senere brug af havet som selvportræt og endelig til hans efterliv i den folkelige erindring som en af sin tids store kulturpersonligheder. Sidst i bogen hører vi Drachmanns egen stemme om mødet mellem hav og kunst, tradition, inspiration og ambition i artiklen Det danske Sømaleri.
