Swedenburg's book, based largely on research in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza in the mid-1980s, is an exploration of the ways in which veterans of the 1936-39 Palestinian revolt against British colonial rule and the Zionist project it protected, remember that historical event.
First sentence: It was an incident from the height of the grand peur, the Great Terrorism Scare that afflicted the United States from 1983 to 1986 (see Said 1988: 46), and it occurred just three days before a bomb went off at a West Berlin disco, killing a U.S. serviceman, wounding thirty-five others, and providing the pretext for the U.S. air raids on Libya.
