About the book

Memoirs of a Holocaust survivor born in 1927 in Działoszyce, Poland, to a large traditional Jewish family, relating his experiences during World War II. Focuses on the period after September 1942, when, in anticipation of deportation, he fled from the ghetto with some other family members to his sister in another town, but then returned. Kamelgard and his father were sent to the Racławice labor camp, but managed to escape; reunited with his mother and sister, they entered the Kraków ghetto. Kamelgard was sent to the Płaszów labor camp, but his parents and sister were killed. In 1945 he was "evacuated" to Mauthausen, went through several labor camps in Austria, and was liberated by the Americans. After his liberation, Kamelgard set out for the Land of Israel, only to be arrested by the British. He spent months in a British prison in Palestine, where he wrote these memoirs. In 1957 he immigrated to the USA.
