On The Blockade

In command of a steamer on which he discovers Confederate spies, Christy Passford tries to intercept two new gunboats traveling from England to the South, then assists in an attempt to stop blockade runners operating out of Florida's Cedar Keys.

First sentence: "She is a fine little steamer, Father, without the possibility of a doubt," said Lieutenant Passford, who was seated at the table with his father in the captain's cabin on board of the Bronx.
