"Josef Katz was 23 years old in 1941 when the Nazis deported him from his home in Lubeck, Germany, to internment ghettos and concentration camps in Latvia. He would endure four years of unrelenting brutality in Riga, Kaiserwald, Stutthof, numbers of smaller labor camps, and a death march in Germany, where he was finally liberated. Returning home to Lubeck, Katz began recording his intense memories as a diary, completing it in 1946 in New York where he emigrated with his new wife. For the next thirty years, the diary remained in a drawer until translated by Hilda Reach and published by the Herzl Press; a German edition followed soon after. This new edition updates that translation. The details Josef Katz records can often be overwhelming, the death of friends and comrades by murder, hunger, exhaustion, beatings, disease, and terror. While we are witnesses to the progressive dehumanization he and others were subjected to, we are also witness to survival and the human will to persevere - these, too, are an essential theme of One Who Came Back."--BOOK JACKET.
