About the book

Challenging the limitations of existing scholarship, this monograph addresses the understudied phenomenon of Paul's literary technique of "fusing" multiple source texts in citations of Scripture. The study employs a comparative methodology of joined citations in Paul's letters alongside ancient writings the Damascus Document and the literature of Philo, examining both similar and distinct literary techniques, hermeneutical assumptions, and theological contributions. Offering a comprehensive analysis of complex quotations in Paul's writings, Belford argues that while Paul shares literary similarities with outside contemporaries, he uniquely joins multiple citations of Scripture together to articulate distinctly Christian theological perspectives. By considering both transparent and non-transparent combinations placed within the authors' arguments, Paul's Fusion of Scripture demonstrates that when compared to single citations, composite quotations allowing for up to two intervening words possess unique literary qualities in Paul's writings. With its study of ancient literary methods toggling between fused and single textual citations in the Pauline literature, Belford's research offers fresh insights into the apostle's hermeneutical and theological engagement with Scripture. -- Back cover.
