Summers are getting drier and hotter, winters wetter. The seawater rises, the groundwater falls and the earth trembles. Hardly anywhere in the Netherlands does the climate challenge come together in such a concentrated way as in Groningen. Within roughly fifty kilometers you will also find almost the entire Dutch relief and soil palette here: from the high sandy soils of the Hondsrug and the peat soils of the Hunzedal to the low sea clay areas along the Reitdiep and the high young sea clay of the Hogeland. This makes Groningen an ideal testing ground for climate adaptation and system change. Sponsland zooms in on a section of the Groningen landscape. On the line from the Hondsrug to Schiermonnikoog we come across eight design locations: four in the city and four in the rural area. Selected by Yttje Feddes (Feddes/Olthof) and Peter Veenstra (LOLA), four Dutch and four international design agencies sketched a future picture for Groningen in 2120. The agencies have provided their plans with concrete steps that can be taken the first morning. It provides a perspective that not only solves the technical climate problems but also enhances the beauty of Stad en Ommeland. Sponsland's plans have a meaning that is much greater than Groningen. All the knowledge gained has been translated in this book into generally applicable principles for climate-adaptive design. In this way, Sponsland wants to inspire everyone who is involved in climate adaptation in the Netherlands and abroad. This is how we set course for a sustainable use of the earth De zomers worden droger en heter, de winters natter.
