The Bastard of Istanbul

The Bastard of Istanbul is a 2006 novel by Elif Şafak, originally written in English. It looks at a family and the social world around it through Istanbul, identity, memory, and questions of belonging, without relying on a simple, single-thread plot summary. The focus is less on big twists and more on the layered feel of place, language, and family life.

It will suit readers who like contemporary fiction with cultural depth, family tension, and a strong sense of setting. The book is written in a direct but thoughtful style, and it works well for anyone drawn to novels that explore identity and history through everyday life rather than through a fast-moving plot. It sits naturally alongside fiction that pays close attention to private relationships and the larger pressures around them.
