The City and the Stars is a science fiction novel by Arthur C. Clarke, first published in 1956. It is a full rewrite of his earlier novel Against the Fall of Night, which was Clarke’s first novel. The book grew out of an earlier version that had already appeared in magazine form and was later reworked by Clarke into this standalone novel.
This book fits readers who like science fiction built around ideas, distant futures, and the long shape of civilization rather than fast plot turns. Its Dying Earth element gives it a sense of a very far future, where the setting matters as much as the events. If you want Clarke at his most speculative, with a calm, thoughtful style and a strong focus on the world itself, this is a good match; it sits close to classic science fiction that treats the future as a place to think through human society.
